Trauma – Big ‘T’ or Little ‘T’

Disturbing or traumatic events that occur in our life cause us to behave or become stuck depending on how we formed perceptions, attitudes or beliefs about the world.  When something happens in our current life that is similar, our reaction is actually a memory being activated.

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, is an evidenced-based psychotherapy technique that enables people to heal from trauma or other distressing life experiences. It can be used to target and treat any negative beliefs or symptoms causing current distress.

It’s effective in decreasing:

  • Relationship stress
  • Performance anxiety
  • Disturbing memories
  • Anxiety or situational stress
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Complicated grief or loss
  • Emotional issues.

How EMDR can help…

EMDR allows the brain to integrate, or digest, the disturbing memory by disrupting working memory during bilateral stimulation such as tapping or eye movements. What is useful is incorporated and what is useless is discarded. Old beliefs are replaced with more adaptive positive beliefs which are extrapolated into future functioning.

EMDR can be offered in a traditional weekly or bi-weekly model versus intensives, although clients who choose intensives will achieve exponential results. Find out more about the benefits of EMDR Intensives here.

If you are interested in weekly or-bi-weekly sessions, you can contact Gina here.

EMDR via a Certified Therapist

Not all EMDR Therapists have the same level of training.  As an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, Trainer, and Certified EMDR therapist I have had to take extensive additional training, demonstrate competency in my skills with a substantial amount of clients and EMDR sessions, and have had over 50 additional hours of individual consultation post training.

I am also required to have an additional 12 units of training specifically in EMDR every two years to maintain my approved consultant and certification. When you are choosing to work with an EMDR therapist, it’s important that you are informed and make the appropriate decision for your needs.
